Overview
Non-Italian spouses of Italian citizens can apply for citizenship after a qualifying period of marriage. The required duration depends on where the couple resides:
- 2 years of marriage if the couple resides in Italy
- 3 years of marriage if the couple resides abroad
- Reduced to 1 year (Italy) or 18 months (abroad) if the couple has children under 18
Same-sex civil unions have been recognized in Italy since 2016 and confer the same citizenship eligibility as marriage.
Language Requirement
For all applications submitted after December 4, 2018, applicants must hold a B1 Italian language certification. Accepted certifications include CILS, CELI, PLIDA, or equivalent examinations recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education.

Application Process
The application follows a two-step process:
- Step 1 — Online Submission: Submit your application and all supporting documents through the Ministry of Interior's online portal.
- Step 2 — Consulate Appointment: Attend an in-person appointment at your local Italian consulate to verify your identity and original documents.
Typical Documentation
Prepare the following documents for your application. All foreign-issued documents must be apostilled and translated into Italian by a certified translator.
- Marriage certificate (apostilled, translated)
- Birth certificate of applicant (apostilled, translated)
- Italian spouse's passport or identity card (photocopy)
- Proof of Italian citizenship of spouse
- Criminal background check from all countries of residence (apostilled, translated)
- B1 Italian language certificate (CILS, CELI, PLIDA, or equivalent)
- Proof of residency
- Proof of marriage duration (confirmation that no separation or divorce proceedings are active)
