Overview

The Family Reunification Visa is a national visa that enables foreign family members to join a non-EU residence permit holder or an Italian/EU citizen living in Italy. Italy places great importance on family unity, and this visa category provides a structured legal pathway to bring your loved ones together under one roof.

Process for Non-EU Sponsors

When the sponsor holds a non-EU residence permit, the process follows two stages:

1. 1 Nulla Osta Application: The sponsor applies online for a nulla osta (family reunification clearance) through the Single Immigration Desk (Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione). This clearance verifies income, housing, and eligibility.
2. 2 Visa Application: Once the nulla osta is granted, the family member applies for the visa at the Italian consulate in their country within 6 months of issuance.

Process for EU/Italian Citizen Sponsors

When the sponsor is an Italian or EU citizen, the process is simplified. No nulla osta is required. The family member applies directly for a visa at the Italian consulate, and a 365-day visa is issued upon approval.
